Low-mass “dwarf” galaxies were probably the first galaxies in the universe to form, and they are the most numerous type of galaxy today. However, due to dwarf galaxies’ low luminosities, much of our understanding of low-mass galaxy evolution has been based on the dwarf galaxies in our Local Group, which can be observed as resolved stellar systems. It is an ongoing challenge to connect these resolved stellar measurements with observations of more distant dwarf galaxies, which appear as unresolved blobs. In this talk, I will discuss ways in which we can bridge measurements of nearby and distant dwarf galaxies, especially in today’s era of large-scale extragalactic surveys.
