Talk Title:
The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Project: Understanding our History and Predicting our Future
Event description:
The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument on the Mayall 4-m telescope at Kitt Peak is revolutionizing not only our understanding of the universe, but also the way in which we enable discovery in astronomy. I will provide an overview of the project, its cartographic, astrophysical and cosmological goals, and the innovations behind its exceptional performance. DESI’s latest results hint at an evolving dark energy, and suggest that we were (yet again) wrong about the future. DESI is also is in the process of revolutionizing our understanding of many branches of astrophysics. I will review where the current discoveries resulting from the DESI experiment are leading us, touch on its broad science impact, and discuss possible future paths in this adventure.

For the lunch talk, my title will be “Spec-S5 and Future Directions for NOIRLab’s Mid-Scale Observatories”
