Postdoctoral Position in the Dragonfly Team

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the Dragonfly team. The Dragonfly Telephoto Array is a low surface brightness-optimized telescope in New Mexico. The array currently consists of 48 high-end telephoto lenses, equipped with broad band filters. It is equivalent to a refractor with a 1m diameter and a focal ratio of f/0.4. We are performing a survey of the entire SDSS area, yielding a unique resource of low surface brightness images of all objects in the extragalactic Northern sky. Simultaneously we are building a 120-lens ultra-narrow band filter array, with the aim of studying the circumgalactic medium.

We are looking for someone to play a leading role in one or both of these projects. Dragonfly involves the development and deployment of hardware, control software, archiving and data access protocols, and analysis software, as well as a multitude of science projects. The successful candidate will focus on their areas of interest and expertise, as well as play an overall leadership role in one of our two major initiatives. Although the person will be based at Yale, the position entails close collaboration with members of the Dragonfly team in Toronto, Victoria, Princeton, and elsewhere. The position is for three years (renewed annually subject to reasonable performance).

Yale offers a lively intellectual environment and access to world-class astronomical facilities, including the Keck and Palomar telescopes. Yale is an institutional member of the SDSS-IV and SDSS-V collaborations.

Applicants must have received their Ph.D. in astronomy or astrophysics/cosmology between January 2019 and June 2022.

Applicants should submit their curriculum vitae, bibliography, and a cover letter by November 30, 2021 to pieter.vandokkum@yale.edu.  Please include “Dragonfly position” in the subject line. The cover letter should explain what is attractive about this position, and provide some details on preparation and background. Candidates should also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted by November 30, again with “Dragonfly position” in the subject line.
